A new generation of wellness in action

Runs and Walks are great exercise

Summer is here, it is time to get outside and enjoy the weather. We have been talking to our community for a long time about the benefits of diet and exercise when it comes to delaying or even preventing Type 2 Diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is 100 % preventable.

With daily exercise, a moderate diet and weight-loss, even the most “at-risk” person can reduce his or he chances of developing the disease.  That would be the message we, the older and wiser generation needs to be teaching our youth before they develop the disease. That means talking about being overweight,   sharing our own experiences and telling our young men and women they don’t have to live with the disease

Diabetes is no longer a disease for older people and adults. Because of the high-calorie, high-fat diets, and the mostly-sedentary lives we have grown accustomed to today, many young adults, adolescents and even children are becoming overweight and obese – which puts them at a very high-risk for developing diabetes at a much younger age than our elders.

We must encourage our youth to begin regular exercise routines, even young children. Kids as young as four- and five-years-old should be encouraged to take part in regular physical activities. Walking, running, playing sports like baseball, kickball, soccer and basketball are all fun options. The goal is to get use to at least 30 minutes of regular exercise three time a week, even playing tag, doing cartwheels or jumping on a trampoline can get the heart-rate up. This “play time” can change the life of your children's and your own dramatically!

The RST Diabetes Prevention Program will be hosting regular road runs and walks throughout the summer in several communities in the Rosebud Reservation. 5K’s and 2 mile walks just about every weekend. Come out, get involved with your kids and set an example that can be the life changing factor for you and your family.
