A core component of the RSTDPP is medical evaluation. This involves a standard interview by a doctor or nurse practitioner (called a “history”), a brief physical examination (called a “physical” l- nothing embarrassing by the way), and possibly some lab tests, depending on what is found on your history or physical. As part of this clinic, staff at the RSTDPP will analyze your food intake, cardio-respiratory fitness, muscle strength, and flexibility. Sometimes, problems with breathing, joints, or blood pressure are found during this evaluation which makes it possible to start treatment early. Even if such problems are not found, the team works with you to devise a plan to reduce your risk through a combination of changes in food intake and physical activity, which includes exercises designed to improve your cardio-respiratory fitness as well as your muscle strength. The exercise portion of this prescription may be performed at home, school, or the Wellness Center. You will receive a complete orientation on these exercise and food changes, AND, after 3-4 months, the team will re-check these aspects of your health and condition to make sure you are advancing toward your health goals. If medication is part of your health plan, you may be called back to re-check your health status more often. |
